President Biden expressed doubts on Thursday that the Senate would pass their election legislation, accepting political realities that left party leaders without a clear path forward. Just two days earlier, the president had implored legislators to approve the measure citing a grave threat to democracy.
After a closed-door lunch with party caucus leaders, he said he still had hope for what the party called a top priority. President Biden said. “Like every other major civil rights bill that came along, if we miss the first time, we can come back and try it a second time. We missed this time.”
“It’s about election subversion, not just whether or not people get to vote. Who counts the vote? That’s what this is about. That’s what makes this so different than anything else we’ve ever done,” President Biden added.
